First Presbyterian Church is part of a world-wide network of mutual mission. The National Ministries Division of the PC (USA) concentrates on mission in the USA. The Worldwide Ministries Division coordinates our ecumenical relations and mission activities in 87 countries.

Mission Co-workers and Mission Specialists are full time international service workers appointed in response to an invitation by overseas ecumenical partner churches or institutions.

Mission Diaconal Workers are also full time international service workers who voluntarily elect subsistence level lifestyles similar to nationals of the country where they are serving.

Mission Volunteers International are mission workers serving overseas for periods of several weeks to two years. Current and past members of our congregation have served in India, Nepal, China, Thailand, Singapore, Sudan, Egypt, the Middle East and Japan.

The Presbytery of Scioto Valley is a mission partner with Pahk [District] Two of the [National Protestant] Church of Christ in Thailand. This Pahk is located in the northern province of Chiangrai with borders on Laos Cambodia and Burma (Myanmar). The Waverly First Presbyterian Church is partner with the Dendamrongsat Church of Pahk Two.

In September 2000, a delegation from Pahk Two visited our Presbytery. Two members of the delegation were from our partner congregation. The Rev. Moree Somana preached on a Sunday morning. See news page for July 23-29 for report on the visit of Chanwit from Pahk 2 to our congregation.

In February 2002 our Pastor, Rick Hays visited our partner church, Pahk Two, as part of the tour arranged by the Global Mission Committee of the Presbytery of Scioto Valley.

Each year this congregation sends an offering of letters to our Representative and Senators urging them to act on hunger-related legislation in Congress, that can affect thousands and millions of hungry people in this country and throughout the world. This action on behalf of the hungry is part of the program pf the Christian organization "Bread for the World."

Each year this church participates with other churches and organizations in the annual Pike County CROP Walk to fight hunger locally and in the world.  The walks are held in Waverly and Piketon on two successive Sundays in September.  Hunger and poverty go hand in hand not only locally but in all parts of the world.  Church World Service, the relief and development arm of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA, uses the funds generated by the CROP Walks across the USA to alleviate hunger and poverty wherever they occur. Twenty five percent of the funds raised locally returns to Pike County to be administered by the Outreach Council.
